Hà Giang - Yên Minh Village
Page four of the Hà Giang Collection
A bamboo frames the points of a karst and the more domesticated landscape
of the valley below
Not all in Yên Minh is tame. This hill is a reminder of the rugged landscapes further to the north
The tour of Hà Giang Province (in northern Vietnam) continues through its Yên Minh District. The interest moving down the hills in an ever more domestic direction - concluding that progress, this page offers some shots of a village. But first a little more country and the trees that adorn it, from that ubiquitous and most delightful rustling of bamboos, to the resilient pines that can cope with the exigences of the mountain climate. Between the hills and the lower levels of villages, wayside houses offer services to visitors, one of these happy receptions is captured below.
Some of the same vertical rock formation, fully displayed
Lower down, scrub increases and signs of terracing appear
Pines manage to stand apart, the...
...wind is not the hazard for them here, that it can be in some countries
On reaching lower levels paths and terracing become evident

Now, flat fields (the yellow patches) provide fertile ground
Left, the road descends into the valley, snaking in and out of view. Above, the valley floor

Another village on the valley floor with its patchwork of fields
and winding paths

hunkered down smoking a pipe; and fixing a bike
Two roadside houses, both with external beam frames as
seen before.
Above, with pan-tiled roof, while, to the
right is a tin roof; and two typical Vietnamese men:
The Vietnamese rarely miss the opportunity of exploiting a possible enterprise, and so, such wayside houses are nearly always also businesses. For this purpose vehicle repairs and cafes are ideal. In one such, a group of men toast us passing tourists
Finally into a village as promised in the page title. First a field of rose bushes in this relatively temperate climate
Melons will hang from this canopy later in the year. A woman bends, tending the garden under the canopy
A quick video of the view backwards on entering the village
And a look back through the village gate
Every tile seems individual...
...on the huddled pan-tiled roofs of the village
House door. The bolt and padlock are universal in Vietnam - together with shuttered and barred windows
Another house with exoskeleton. Beyond it, over a gate (insufficiently wide for any car) the sign reads 'Popular Motel' - maybe a Google translation? More accurate would be 'People's Boarding House'
The village gate
A house gate of similar design to the village one
Another similarity: nearly matching bonnet and cardi
Touring in these northern parts with an old American Jeep attracts
attention.
In this case, the interest was such that, at a hotel in the town of Yen Minh, a local TV crewe were sent out to speak to the visitors - a short video of the filming
