Hà Giang - Yên Minh Country
Page four of the Hà Giang Collection
Not the most comfortable form of transport for driver or beast - airless tyres!
This tour of Hà Giang continues on into the country west of
Đồng Văn Town.
And so into Yên Minh District. Here the story is similar to that of
Bắc Mê,
the reduced dependence of the landscape on karsts and tumbling ravines, and the appearance of more domestic ways of life - which continue on the next pages. But Yên Minh is far from bucolic, so this page offers further karsts and dramatic hillscapes before descending to the softer countryside in the south of Hà Giang Province.
To the right, a video giving the feel of the most northerly part of the district.
A view in the north-east of the district - a karst landscape
The road tenaciously clinging to the hillside, and finding its way down to the lower valleys
Soft evening light moulding this protuberance which
stands above...
Looking further down the hills, finds the signs of agriculture
...a populated valley
And down to the terraced riverside
Winding paths connect a landscape dotted with houses
Clouds often hang low between the hills, offering relief from a tropical sun
In this case, while the valley bottom is fertile, its sides are stone and scrub
Here, less than full cloud - such mistiness is very common
When the sun does come out it is relentless. Almost at the centre is slight colour, under a rock overhang - below is an enlargement...
...A closer shot shows the sheltering women - and, bottom right, a resting shovel indicates the kind of work they were engaged in, under that sun
Fields on the valley floor can be fertile - seven dots are at work here
Women walking between the fields, and below...
Rockier paths and heavy burdens
These baskets are also borne by men
...a better view of the women's loads
Out from between the karsts, down in the valleys...
...roads run into a more open terrain
And the roads need constant repair, suffering as they do from landslips and heavy rains. Here it is women doing the carrying - although this is
not always so
Sugar cane and children offer tourists...
...camera food; however, many are happy with
shots of themselves
Sometimes a photographer can help the composition
