Sunsets parting day
Why are sunsets so attractive? I know its not purely a personal quirk as they gave me reliable sales for many years. There is their visual aspect; whereas the day may begin with hues of blue-green, and less often of magenta, it is apt to end with warm shades of yellow, orange and red; the day moves from a wake-up call to a lullaby. Then maybe there is a social memory; artificial light was (and still is for many) expensive, normal life ran from dawn to dusk, then day time activities had to cease, and the conviviality of eating could replace work. And certainly, psychologically, there is a period of peace at dusk, when the bustle of birds and winds subside, reflection is aided, and we are pointed to repose. The photograph also reminds us of sunset’s diversity: tropical sunsets are like a light being switched off, children are packed off to bed, sleep is disturbed by gales. So circling through sunsets we come to their symbolic role, standing for the parting day: maybe abrupt, interrupted, even missing, but a reassuring diurnal possibility in so much of life.
