Beech Avenue intuition
Coming through this beech avenue recently I stopped and took its photograph. It appealed to me. Supposing it did not catch your attention, then I might point out the greens, which seem myriad, and how we are sensitive to them, probably from the aeons of time in which they were the colour of the habitat in which we lived, then there is the diversity of shapes that beech boles can take, or that collectively they form an ‘avenue’, for which the Oxford dictionary offers ‘a tree lined approach to a country house’: the formation of a prospect which leads us onwards, in both place and time. In this way we adduce arguments as to why such a simple picture might appeal. But maybe you saw only a green scene of beech trees with a road. Isn’t Hume right when he points out that arguments do not sway our initial impressions; points made about the photograph do not touch our feeling. On seeing such a scene we know at once we like it, or we pass it by. Characterizations and arguments leave that first intuition unmoved. intuition unmoved.

This avenue is on the road to Gatehouse, after leaving Laurieston, in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland.
