Why on earth Long ones and short ones Among icicles?

Uejima Onitsura (1660-1738)

The author of this haiku, was recognised as outstanding already in his teens. He left the service of a local lord to devote himself entirely to 'The Way of Haiku', the essence of which he proclaimed to be sincerity. Sincerity, a true correspondence between inside and outside. Between the heart of a poem and its words. Between the words and the thoughts. Between my thoughts and my words. Between you and me.

Other pages relate: images and meaning in Chinese Art and calligraphy; meaning in thought and language; the place of beauty in art, and to a Haiku on dew.
